Description
The peyote pilgrims
by Crescencio Pérez Robles:
From time immemorial the Huichol made every year a pilgrimage to Wirikuta, the birthplace of the sun in the Sierra Quemada. The peyote grows in the desert at the foot of this mountain is very special. In the rituals pilgrims eat the peyote espiriu they call "hikuri" to receive instruction and direction. The Spanish built a mining town near Wirikuta in the desert of San Luis Potosi called Real de Catorce.
The pilgrimage takes 30 days walking back and forth. The road is marked by many caves, springs, lakes and other natural formations, each of these places has special powers. This is the way which their ancestors traveled when the world was formed. Here fasting pilgrims perform rituals to purify themselves in preparation for the arrival Wirikuta.
After eating the sacred plant in the desert they collect an amount to bring to its territory where it plays a central role in the ceremonies of the community.
